Mairs and Power Investment Style

Mairs and Power is a small firm whose strength and success has resulted from applying a conservative growth investment approach consistently for over 70 years. Both the Growth and Balanced Funds are built on a foundation of selected quality growth stocks purchased at what management considers to be reasonable valuation levels. When these securities are purchased, the intention is to hold these issues for relatively long periods of time to maximize tax-efficiency and allow the power of compounding to build wealth for its shareholders. However, sales are made on occasion in response to such factors as changing fundamentals, investment strategy shifts, and excessive valuation.

The cornerstone of this investment approach is a regional strategy. Both Funds have a heavy representation in stocks of companies headquartered in the Upper Midwest with the Growth Fund having a higher concentration than the Balanced Fund. This concentration is due to the fact that there is an unusually large number of attractive companies in this region, and that we know these companies extremely well having operated in this region for over 70 years. While the Funds have a national charter, their success has largely resulted from their regional approach.

The other distinguishing feature of the Funds is that they are managed by individuals with considerable investment experience. The manager of the Mairs and Power Funds, along with the other six members of the investment management committee, have a total of over 200 years of investment experience. These seven professionals work together on a team approach, leveraging their experience to the benefit of shareholders.
